The land where the park is located was once a run down commercial area. In 1996, funding for the park became available and the large six acres were purchased. The area now incorporates both a residential and commercial community. Located in the park area are many historical buildings.

Access to Eno River State Park is through Cole Mill, Few's Ford, Pump Station, Pleasant Green and Cabe Lands.

Located just south of Hillsborough and west of Durham, Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area can be accessed off I-85 at exit 164. Popular activities include fishing and hiking. The Neuse River is inhabited by largemouth bass, bluegill, chain pickerel and bullhead.
